WATCH: Mustang GTD 2025 becomes fastest American production car at Nürburgring
Redefining speed and innovation for production supercars worldwide
Germany’s iconic Nürburgring Nordschleife is widely regarded as the ultimate proving ground for sports cars.
The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD has now claimed its place in history as the fastest American production car to conquer this challenging 12.9-mile, 73-turn track.
Driven by Multimatic Motorsports’ Dirk Müller, the 815-horsepower Mustang GTD clocked an officially certified lap time of 6:57.685.
This achievement makes it the fifth-fastest production sports car ever recorded at the Nürburgring and only the sixth to break the elusive seven-minute barrier.
Record-breaking lap
The record fulfilled a bold promise made during the car’s debut in August 2023. Ford CEO Jim Farley celebrated the milestone: “The team behind Mustang GTD took what we’ve learned from decades on the track and engineered a Mustang that can compete with the world’s best supercars. We’re proud to be the first American automaker with a car that can lap the Nürburgring in under seven minutes, but we aren’t satisfied. We know there’s much more time to find with Mustang GTD.”
From GT3 to Supercar
The Mustang GTD represents the pinnacle of Mustang performance, blending lessons from Ford Performance Motorsports and Multimatic Motorsports’ GT3 program with innovations unrestricted by racing regulations. The result? A supercar equipped with advanced technologies like carbon-ceramic brakes, active aerodynamics, a supercharger, and semi-active suspension.
While the car’s carbon-fiber body shares DNA with GT3 racers, its production version includes features like motorsports-derived safety gear, such as a competition seat with a five-point harness and a roll cage, mandated for the Nürburgring lap.
Behind this achievement is a dedicated team of engineers and designers who transformed the Mustang GT3 race car into the GTD supercar over two years. Their efforts are chronicled in The Road to the Ring, a 13-minute documentary that captures the journey from testing at iconic American tracks like Sebring to the final development sessions at the Nürburgring.
The film, available on Ford’s YouTube channel and social media platforms, features insights from key players, including Jim Farley, Dirk Müller, and Multimatic’s Chief Technical Officer Larry Holt.

As Jim Farley hinted, the story is far from over: “We’ll be back.”
